Tough measures designed to force more benefit claimants to look for work are going to be introduced by the Government. People could face having their benefits docked if they are not being deemed to be making enough effort to find a job.

The measures are to be confirmed in Chancellor Jeremy Hunt's Autumn Statement next week and form a stricter approach towards the welfare system. Mr Hunt has said too many people have "chosen" a life of benefits over work.

Universal Credit and other benefit claimants will have to demonstrate they are taking active steps to find work and if they don't, could see their payments cut. Other support such as free prescriptions and help with energy bills could also be stopped.

The Chancellor is set to announce a "back to work plan" during his set-piece speech next Wednesday, November 22. It will involve helping up to 1.1 million people get off benefits and move into work.

Claimants could see their benefits sanctioned if they fail to meet certain requirements, such as meeting with work coaches. Cuts to payments could continue until they comply as part of the crackdown.

It has been reported that those who face sanctions for over six months could lose access to additional benefits such as free prescriptions, dental care, legal aid and help with energy costs. Mr Hunt said he felt compelled to take action to stem the rising tide of people choosing not to look for work and live on benefits instead, and warned there would be "consequences" for those who refuse to engage.

He said: "These changes mean there’s help and support for everyone – but for those who refuse it, there are consequences too. Anyone choosing to coast on the hard work of taxpayers will lose their benefits.”

Mel Stride, the work and pensions secretary, added: "Our message is clear: if you are fit, if you refuse to work, if you are taking taxpayers for a ride – we will take your benefits away."
